Wisconsin Alumni Association case study
The Wisconsin Alumni Association is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, and marking the occasion with a social media milestone: reaching 150,000 Facebook fans just one week before their big birthday on campus. Web editor Wendy Hathaway will discuss how WAA used this online fan base to increase awareness of their anniversary celebrations and how the organization is using social media-only content as a way to attract more fans and engage alumni.

Wendy has worked for the Wisconsin Alumni Association since May 2010 and manages content and design on both uwalumni .com and WAA 's social media platforms. She graduated from UW-Madison in 2004 with a Journalism degree and has experience in television news and non-profit marketing/communications.

10:45- Session II: Panel Discussion: What's Next in Social Media?

Advancement is all about relationships, and so is social media. Our presenters will help lead a vibrant and timely discussion about new and emerging platforms that will include but not be limited to the following topics:

  • "There's an app for that": The emergence of mobile technology on campuses and its applications for alumni associations and advancement offices.
  • Discussion of geographical location based platforms such as foursquare, facebook places, groupon. It's trendy, but who's using it effectively in higher education?
  • Is your campus ready to go viral?: Harnessing the power of video.
    This will be an interactive discussion, allowing time for questions and participant feedback.

Michael Hostad
Director of Web and Mobile Services
UW-Milwaukee
Michael Hostad is the campus web architect at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He works closely with University Relations to guide the campus' online and mobile strategies while overseeing a team of 13 web developers and designers.

Jamie Ceman

Assistant Director, Multichannel Marketing and Web
UW-Oshkosh
Jamie Ceman manages UW-Oshkosh's branding and multichannel marketing team within the department of Integrated Marketing and Communications. She is responsible for the ongoing roll-out of a new brand and integrated marketing strategy for UW-Oshkosh.

Jeffrey T Pohorski
Video Producer, UW-Whitewater Marketing and Media Relations

Jeffrey Pohorski has directed and edited projects for PBS, National Geographic, Hallmark and Habitat for Humanity.

He served as director of photography for The History Channel, A&E and Discovery Channel. He has traveled to more than 25 countries producing and shooting documentaries. Pohorski is currently the video producer for UW-Whitewater Marketing and Media Relations department and working on two independent films-Jack London and The Scattering.

Using LinkedIn to Enhance Institutional Advancement

Social media continues to alter the landscape of university communication and outreach. Those who engage are learning how to utilize these tools for research, engagement, communication, sourcing talent and peer-to-peer interaction. In this session you'll learn how to utilize LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter (and other social tools) in ways you never imagined, and where social media is heading in the future.

John Hill
Higher Education Evangelist for LinkedIn

John Hill, Director of Alumni Career Services at Michigan State University, provides career services to 420,000 MSU alumni. He runs the sixth largest official college/university LinkedIn alumni group—with more than 23,000 members—and uses Twitter to promote career development information to MSU students and alumni. He was the architect for the first college/university partnership with LinkedIn in June 2011 and has given more than 500 presentations on how to use LinkedIn to increase employability. He worked 10 years in regional and national media companies in market research, business development, brand management and editorial. Hill is a graduate of Michigan State University.
