College, $20,000 from the 2010 Ball Brothers Foundation Venture Fund competition to establish the Indianapolis News Bureau near the Indiana Statehouse. Hope College (Holland, Mich.), $599,835 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to provide additional scholarship support to students from Holland interested in pursuing careers in science, engineering, technology and mathematics fields. Also, $295,683 from NSF to fund collaborative faculty-student research in nuclear physics. Marian University (Indianapolis), $500,000 from The Indiana Department of Education to establish a Turnaround Leadership Academy to identify, recruit, train, and develop leaders to turn around Indiana's chronically lowest-achieving schools. McKendree University (Lebanon, Ill.), $50,000 from a Walmart College Success Award to expand programs and support for first-generation college students. The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Foundation, $330,000 from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to improve student success and performance of postsecondary institutions. Moraine Valley Community College (Palos Hills, Ill.), $1,502,520 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to support training in health information technology. The college is one of 17 Midwest partners that are sharing a $15 million two-year grant awarded to Cuyahoga Community College in Ohio. The Medical College of Wisconsin (Milwaukee), $1 million from the Bryon Riesch Paralysis Foundation to support spinal cord injury research and establish The Bryon Riesch Paralysis Foundation Laboratories. Also, with the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, $490,000 from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to investigate the function of the human T cell leukemia virus type 2 (HTLV-2) and a genetically related retrovirus, HTLV-1. Mount Mary College (Milwaukee), $500,000 from The Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation to support construction of a Student Success Center in the College’s Haggerty Library. Also, $25,000 from The Greater Milwaukee Foundation to design and implement Students Building Bridges, a new program for college students from diverse backgrounds. Oakton Community College (Des Plaines, Ill.), $40,000 from the Illinois Community College Board, with support from the Joyce Foundation, to document Oakton’s effort to help certified nursing assistants at Presbyterian Homes gain the education they need to pass the licensed practical nurse certification exam and enter a registered nurse associate degree program. Also, $15,000 from the MetLife Foundation to help train caregivers for the elderly. The grant stems from the Caregiving Project for Older Americans, an initiative to raise awareness of the shortage of professional caregivers and develop a national approach to recruiting, training, and retaining professional caregivers. Ohio Wesleyan University (Delaware), $494,980 form the National Science Foundation to establish an ecological research and education network among 12 primarily undergraduate institutions, with the network expanding over time to include additional partners. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (Terre Haute, Ind.), $75,000 from the 2010 Ball Brothers Foundation Venture Fund for seed funding for start-up initiatives aimed at stimulating creativity and innovation and fostering competition and collaboration. Trine University (Angola, Ind.), three gifts to support athletics and Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium to open this fall. Among the gifts: $40,000 from Parkview Orthopedic Hospital in Fort Wayne, $20,000 from Dr. Brett Gemlick, a physician with Ortho Northeast One, Fort Wayne, and $20,000 from Ortho Northeast One. Also, $100,000 as an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant for energy efficiency upgrades to its Hershey Hall through a boiler replacement project.
