Three Dimensional Leadership: Up, Down and Sideways

Mayfair

We spend a career building a body of knowledge within our profession. Most of advancement skill and leadership is based on apprenticeship and those who serve the profession well are awarded expertise born of both technique and experience. Our reward is to find ourselves swimming in larger and larger pools and, thereby, challenged to successfully contribute at multiple levels of leadership. Often the only preparation is the reading we do and the networking we have with colleagues at senior levels. Do we know enough about the countless aspects of institutional life and strategy to contribute where needed? What can our staff expect from us? What should we expect from our presidents? How do we learn to make a contribution up, down and sideways? This session begins with a few observations relating to the questions above, and will undoubtedly provoke a lively discussion of this challenge in three-dimensional leadership.

Reframing Donor Conversations in This Economy

Recent downturns have affected more than the economy and colleges' endowment distributions. Donors have also been adversely impacted in ways unseen in years. Individual donors previously reliant on investment dividend payments, which have been suspended, are now unexpectedly using their financial resources to support extended family. And, area foundations with vastly reduced assets and distributions have struggled to pay prior multi-year commitments. Hear the unique conversations community colleges have been having in tricky situations, at a time when students need additional financial support.

What Makes Editors Tick

Mayfair

Let's face it, editors and executives often have differing opinions when it comes to magazine content.
