Opening Extravaganza feature:
Ron Clark
Ron Clark has been called “America’s Educator.”
His work with disadvantaged students in rural North Carolina and inner-city Harlem has garnered worldwide attention. He was invited to the White House on three separate occasions to be honored by the president. His work and dedication to making a difference in the lives of children led him to be named Disney’s American Teacher of the Year in 2000.
Since that honor, Clark has appeared on NBC’s “Today Show” and “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” He was featured in Winfrey’s magazine, in which Winfrey named him her first “Phenomenal Man.”
Clark’s experiences as a teacher are the subject of the movie, “The Ron Clark Story,” which stars Matthew Perry in the lead role. Clark has authored two books popular in the education profession. His first, “The Essential 55,” is a New York Times Best Seller and is currently published in over 25 countries and in its 11th printing of over one million copies.
Recently, Clark opened a school in Atlanta for students from low-wealth areas. The Ron Clark Academy applies a curriculum based on travel around the world. Each year students will journey on international adventures. By the time they are in eighth grade each child will have visited every continent
