Advancement 101: Pre-Conference Workshop for Newcomers to the Field of Advancement
Saturday, Dec. 8, Noon-5:15 p.m.
If you are new to the profession, consider this session the prerequisite for the CASE V conference and your career as a whole. This workshop is designed to cross-train new professionals in all the advancement disciplines (alumni relations, development, communications, advancement services, student advancement programs, etc.) and will provide you with tools so you can hit the ground running.
After lunch, take part in these programs:
Who is in Charge in Higher Education?
12:45-1:30 p.m.
Just who is in charge back at home in our institutions? The president, the board, the faculty ... the advancement staff? Well, probably not the advancement staff, at least not directly! However, the others listed do play significant roles in the idea of “shared governance” on campus. From firsthand experiences, a current university president and former higher education leadership professor will share insights that will help explain how decisions get made and implemented in academia. Gain valuable facts, tidbits and scholarly experience from a professional.
Newcomers Forum: The Nuts and Bolts of Advancement
1:45-3:15 p.m.
Newcomers will gain insight from a group of advancement professionals on the value of understanding and embracing the profession as a whole. This interactive session will allow you, as advancement leaders of tomorrow, to explore the intricate and sometimes challenging relationships between the various disciplines. The goals are twofold: 1) to provide an introduction to advancement where all questions are welcome and dialogue is encouraged and 2) to develop a basic understanding of how professionals in our field should work together to create a progressive, relevant and successful advancement organization today and for the future.
3:15-3:45 p.m. Meet conference committee and board members
Making the Most of your CASE Contacts
3:45-4:15 p.m.
This very practical session will be led by one of our very top CASE volunteers who will share her thoughts, tips and observations regarding the establishment of a network of CASE contacts that will serve you throughout this conference and well beyond. This CASE network will allow you to grow as an advancement professional through the maze of issues, dilemmas and opportunities. Many CASE contacts become lifelong friends offering touchstones of reality and encouragement over a range of time from months to decades!
Network = Net Worth: How Your CASE Contacts can Shape Your Success
4:15-5:15 p.m.
As they say, it’s not just about what you know, but also who you know. This session will give insider information on the best professional resources and means to network in the profession. Whether it is in person or online, professional networking is invaluable to a successful career. Participants will get advice from seasoned professionals and learn about online resources, professional publications and organizations that advancement veterans say they can't live without.
