Pre-Conference Workshop for Newcomers to the Field of Advancement

Saturday, Dec. 9, Noon-7:30 p.m.

If you are new to the profession, consider this session the prerequisite for the CASE V conference and your career as a whole. This workshop is designed to cross-train new professionals in all the advancement disciplines (alumni relations, development, communications, advancement services, student advancement programs, etc.) and will provide you with tools so you can hit the ground running.

In this fun, interactive workshop, you will:

  • get advice and insights from seasoned professionals in all advancement disciplines.
  • be trained on professional ethics and standards.
  • hear tips on getting the most out of the conference.
  • learn about leadership strategies for new advancement professional.
  • build your professional network with CASE V colleagues.
  • obtain an overview of the CASE organization.

We will begin the day with lunch. The afternoon will be peppered with informative sessions, group discussions, games, ice breakers and Q&A. Jennifer Heisey, program director of the University of Cincinnati Alumni Association, will serve as emcee for the day. We will also award our CASE V Newcomers Fellowships for 2006.

Each participant will leave the workshop with an "Advancement Starter Kit," a profile on inCircle Pro, and all the tools needed for a successful future in advancement. After a day of creating your professional network, you can add some members to your social network as we top off the day with the Newcomers Social. Don't miss this opportunity!

1-2 p.m.

Creating You Inc.: How to Become CEO of Your Career

Believe it or not, getting the job is the easy part. How do you learn to assess the market so you know what you need to learn to get that next promotion? How do you develop a great relationship with your boss, without kissing up? How important is a mentor, and where do you find one? Join an advancement veteran and professional management coach for this fun, interactive session that will teach you how to read organizational politics, position yourself for success, and create a career that makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning.

2:30-4 p.m.

CASE Study: The Nuts and Bolts of Advancement

Newcomers will gain insight from a current vice president on the value of understanding and embracing the profession as a whole. This interactive session will allow you, as advancement leaders of the tomorrow, to explore the complex, intricate and sometimes challenging relationships between the various disciplines. The goals are twofold: 1) to provide an introduction to advancement where questions and dialogue are welcome and 2) to develop a basic understanding of how professionals in our field should work together to create a progressive, relevant and successful advancement organization today and for the future.

4-5 p.m.

Network = Net Worth: How Your CASE Contacts Can Shape Your Success

As they say, it's not just about what you know, but also who you know. This session will give insider information on the best professional resources and means to network in the profession. Whether it is in person or online, professional networking is invaluable to a successful career. Here, participants will get advice from seasoned professionals and learn about online resources, professional publications and organizations that advancement veterans say they can't live without. At the conclusion of this workshop newcomers will know how to best utilize membership in CASE and make the most out of the CASE V conference experience.

Most importantly, everyone will leave this session with an Advancement Starter Kit full of tools and resources to guarantee personal and professional success.

Newcomers Social

All participants in the Newcomers program should plan to end the day with a fun, relaxing social hour. After spending the day learning about the professional side of the business, this will provide an opportunity to know each other on a more personal level.

Space in the Newcomers Pre-Conference Workshop is limited, so register early.

Registration is $100 and covers materials, lunch, refreshments and social. Newcomers workshop participants must be registered for the conference. No on-site registrations will be
accepted.

Registration materials will be available at the conference registration desk on Level 1 in the River Exhibition Hall Promenade from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9.
