Pre-Conference Workshop for Newcomers to the Field of Advancement
Saturday, December 10, Noon-5 p.m.
Starting a new career in institutional advancement? This workshop is designed specifically for you. Interact with other newcomers, build your professional network, and be introduced to the profession by a group of seasoned professionals. The workshop will include a presentation on leadership for the new advancement professional as well as specific breakout sessions on alumni relations, communications and development. Following these profession-based sessions, you will have an opportunity to ask questions of the day's speakers. We will end by awarding the Newcomer Fellowships to eight deserving professionals. You will not want to miss this opportunity.
Keynote presentation
Essential Leadership and Communication Skills for Newcomers to Advancement
This interactive session will span numerous leadership and communication topics. It will provide any newcomers to advancement with the essential foundations for a successful advancement career, as well as some secrets to help you stand out as an all-star in your office.

Learn how alumni, communications, and development staffs can work together to advance the mission of the institution. You will pick up some great tips on being a team player within the Advancement division.
Communications
This workshop provides a crash course in how to work effectively in the campus communications office. Discover creative ways to build working relationships with colleagues, those across campus, the media, alumni and others. Get ideas on how to get your institution's message out creatively — via print, the Web, the media, and others.

Alumni Relations
As a new professional to alumni relations, you are charged with developing or enhancing programs for alumni around your institution's needs. This workshop will provide an insight into key programs to build a successful program.

Registration is $100 and covers materials, lunch, and refreshments. Newcomers workshop participants also must be registered for the conference. Space is limited, so register early. No on-site registrations will be accepted. For more information, contact Janie Spencer at spencer.jane@uwlax.edu.
When you arrive at the conference, materials will be available at the conference registration desk on Level 1 in the River Exhibition Hall Promenade.
