What you Need to Know About Web Standards
— Even if You're Not a Web Designer
Sheraton III
Technology moves fast. How do you keep up

it is? Adopting Web standards can minimize development time, reduce
file sizes to minimize bandwidth, create printer-friendly pages and
offer greater accessibility to your users. This presentation will highlight
what you need to know about Web standards -- and why you should care.
Daniel Frommelt, the Web coordinator at the University
of Wisconsin-Platteville, has a background in publishing, teaching, management
and computer technologies. An author for A List Apart (www.alistapart.com),

Content Management 101
Sheraton III
When they visit your Web site, people want
content — not Flash animations. So creating great content and
using it successfully on the Web is key to providing a great user experience.
Contrary to what many people think, content management is not about
technology — and it's time to stop thinking that software makes
content management possible. While technology helps, content management
is
really about how people create, share, manage and deploy content on
the Web and in other media. This session will explore how to make content
management work effectively on your Web site.
Michael Stoner, president of mStoner, is a consultant
who often writes and speaks about the strategic role of the website in institutional
communications.

Blogs for University Communication
Sheraton III
With the number of blogs estimated at half
a million and growing every day, it's not surprising that the blog
is making its way into college and university settings. (What's a blog?
Short for "web log," it's on "online diary" with entries in reverse
chronological order, and updated frequently with software like Blogger
or Moveable Type.) This presentation will discuss blogs' potential
as communication vehicles in a university or college setting, and will
also feature a brainstorming session with general audience participation
to identify creative ways to use blogs.

E-Gads! My Job has Become High tech!
Sheraton V
When many of us entered the business of university
marketing, the Internet, Web, e-mail, e-commerce —maybe even
cable TV — did not exist. Remember the days before personal computers,
cell
phones, Palm Pilots, digital photography, Blackberries, CD's and DVD's,
Blue Tooth and MP3's? Today we're expected to be experts in all things "E"— a tough challenge when the rules are changing daily. This session,
though light-hearted, will take a hard look at our new e-competencies
from several angles: how our jobs have changed, how our constituencies
have changed and what we can expect to happen in the foreseeable future.
Prior to joining Lipman Hearne in Chicago, Thomas

created research instruments such as the Market Positioning Questionnaire, Pricing
Sensitivity Study, and the Web Site Effectiveness Study, an Internet-administered
survey.
